Facts About Falls

An ever-escalating, increasingly expensive problem
  • Falls are the #2 cause of death among all ages!
  • Falls are the #1 cause of nonfatal unintentional injuries among all ages! (NSC facts on injuries, 2003)
  • Falls are the #1 cause of accidental death among persons 65 and over!
  • Hospital admissions for hip fractures increased to 332,000 in 1999 and are expected to exceed 500,000 per year by 2040! (US Congress Elder Fall Prevention Act of 2003, S. 1217)
  • Cost of accidents just at home is estimated at over $380 billion per year. The #1 cause of those accidents is falls! (University of NC at Chapel Hill, 2002)
  • Children and athletes have an even higher incidence than the elderly. (American Geriatrics Society, et al 2001)
  • Most people are unaware of their fall-risk, and even if they are aware, they rarely report symptoms to physicians.

MOST FALLS ARE PREVENTABLE!!!!!!

Diagnostic testing, evaluation, and therapy

Current technology and medical research allows Dr. Engelbart to identify patients that are at increased risk for falls even though they may not display obvious symptoms.

Dr. Engelbart uses medical history, a physical examination, and diagnostic tests to assess the function of the vestibular system and to rule out alternative causes of symptoms.

Diagnostic testing and evaluation will include:

  • The CAPS (comprehensive assessment of postural systems) will quickly screen patients for balance and equilibrium disorders, sway, and assess fall-risk in less than a minute. If your score is impaired, Dr. Engelbart will develop a personal Vestibular Rehabilitation program for you.
  • The VNG (videonystagmography) records eye movements and eye movement waveforms during vestibular testing and rehabilitation. This identifies possible:

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy will improve:

  • Fall Prevention
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Balance/Coordination
  • Tinnitus
  • Athletic Performance
  • Scoliosis
  • Many other functional and structural irregularities
